Angelina Jolie is more than just a talented actress – she embodies our hopes and aspirations, taking on a range of roles from vulnerable heroines to compassionate humanitarians, and even playing the role of Brad Pitt’s wife. Her latest movie, Wanted, taps into her desire for action-packed adventures. In interviews, Jolie has also been open about her unconventional family life with Pitt, and how her own childhood experiences have influenced it. She has shared her thoughts on the recent loss of her mother, her strained relationship with her father, and the sensuality she felt during her second pregnancy.
It’s common knowledge that pregnancy is a different experience for every woman. While some might relish the changes in their bodies, others might not feel the same way. It appears that Angelina Jolie falls into the former group, considering how frequently she was photographed during her twin pregnancy back in 2008. There are rumors that her partner, Brad Pitt, who has long been considered a heartthrob, may have contributed to her positive outlook on the experience. Whatever the reason, Jolie looked happy and content with her noticeably large baby bump, as evident in the photos that were widely circulated by the media.
With a big smile and a burst of laughter, she exclaimed her admiration for it, saying “It makes me feel like a complete woman. Every part of my body has a purpose.” She gestured with her hands, which were long and lean like a basketball player’s, mimicking the motion of pressing down on a ripe fruit. “Pregnancy makes you more curvy and flexible, and the experience of carrying a little life inside of you is truly amazing.”
During our conversation at the Four Seasons Hotel in Austin, Texas, the actress confided that she feels fortunate to have a positive pregnancy experience. According to Jolie, women may have different experiences during pregnancy depending on their partner. Fortunately, Jolie’s partner finds her pregnancy very attractive and this makes her feel sexy. Prior to our meeting, Jolie had dropped off two of her children at a school where they will attend until Pitt finishes filming “Tree of Life” with Terrence Malick. The other four children were being taken care of by nannies and tutors on a ranch rented by the couple. These children include Maddox (6), Zahara (3), Shiloh (2), and Pax (4), who were all adopted from different countries. When asked about the movie “Tree of Life,” Jolie admitted that she would not be the best person to explain it, but that it has an existential theme and portrays a nuclear 1950s family with Pitt playing the role of a strong father.
I asked Jolie about the help she’s getting and she said that no one is allowed to spend the night. Nevertheless, they cater to women coming from various cultural and ethnic backgrounds, including a brilliant Vietnamese teacher, a Belgian resident with Congolese ancestry, and an artistic American in charge of the art workshops. Even though their policies may change for future clients, the team is doing an excellent job so far.
The unique composition of the Jolie-Pitt family is setting a new standard in Hollywood, with children from various parts of the world and parents who are stunningly attractive but not married. While some may scrutinize their unmarried status, Angelina Jolie emphasized that both she and Brad have been previously married. She further explained that creating a nurturing and loving family while being exceptional parents can be a daunting task, and their unconventional approach works best for them. Despite lacking legal nuptials, they share a deep sense of commitment that mirrors that of a married couple.
As Jolie walked into the Four Seasons, she looked around the room swiftly and made her way across the floor with her head down. It was evident that she was used to the attention and may have felt unsafe. In the words of T.S. Eliot, “The roses had the look of flowers that are looked at.” Her movement through the lobby was quick, resembling a shark swimming in the ocean. She often obscured her face or made it appear ordinary, possibly to avoid being recognized. Despite her efforts, people around her reacted in a distinct manner, creating a flurry of activity. Jolie carried herself with an air of dignity, as if she were an emissary from a secret order or a messenger from a lost kingdom. This was evident in every photograph taken of her. While she was often portrayed as a princess or aristocrat, in person, she appeared more human and real. Though the same product was there, it was removed from the dream world created by set designers and advertisers.
In our interview, we sat near a wall of windows at the back of the hotel restaurant. People swarmed around Jolie as if they were debris orbiting a planet, demonstrating the power of gravity. She wore a silky maternity dress under a stand-up comic or Frankenstein-like blue blazer. After some time, she removed her jacket, revealing her arms adorned with hieroglyphic tattoos that told stories of her wild teenage years and marriages to Jonny Lee Miller and Billy Bob Thornton. Inquisitively, I asked about Jolie’s pregnancy and how far along she was.
Wearing a sad expression, she chose not to reveal the deadline as she was worried about causing unnecessary anxiety. Whenever Pitt or Jolie works on a movie, they bring their family along and try to create a sense of familiarity by taking familiar things from home. To them, places are not significant; they represent HOME in capital letters – a fantasy that serves as a memory of someone else’s past. Jolie is an exceptional celebrity who follows a reverse Method acting approach, immersing herself in the stories of her characters and making them a part of her real life. She doesn’t just take on the role of the character; rather, the character becomes her, such as the disturbed youth in Girl, Interrupted, the wild child in Gia, the humanitarian in Beyond Borders, and even being married (in a way) to Brad Pitt in Mr. & Mrs. Smith.
During an interview, Angelina Jolie revealed her reasons for accepting the role in the high-budget action film Wanted, which featured James McAvoy and Morgan Freeman. Jolie explained that she was instinctively drawn to the physical and violent nature of the role at a time when she had lost her mother. She was in a strange and uncertain state of mind while transitioning from filming a movie about a child’s kidnapping (Changeling) to another film dealing with kidnapping and loss. Jolie had been busy adopting children, working on various movie projects, and participating in charitable causes while becoming a subject of fascination for tabloids. Her life had been scrutinized at every turn, and she had become an icon for women across America. In 2008, Jolie was considered one of the highest-paid actresses and had accumulated numerous awards, making her comparable to the most legendary stars in Hollywood history at their peak.
Jolie exuded a sense of happiness as she ordered an omelet, relishing the freedom that came with being pregnant. While we dined, time seemed to fly by, dish after dish coming and going. Her infectious laughter was often accompanied by a hand covering her mouth, and when it wasn’t, she gazed longingly out the window. Our conversation touched on everything from her family to her career, including her relationship with Pitt. Even though she had previously vowed to only marry someone outside of her field, she found herself drawn to Brad, who was nothing like what she was looking for but ended up being the perfect father figure for her children. To her, he was more of a dad who loved architecture and travel than an actor. Jolie hoped that he would focus more on architecture, even though he wasn’t an architect himself. She had seen him work with partners to design hotels and studios, and collaborate with other architects to refurbish a shotgun house with green architecture, teaching her a lot about the importance of the homes we live in.
Angelina Jolie recently shared her thoughts on the evolution of the paparazzi industry. She noted that people have an affinity for scandalous news and juicy gossip, almost like it’s comfort food. People tend to enjoy reading about other people’s problems as a form of escapism, especially if they’re unhappy themselves. Back in the day, celebrities were more focused on their craft and less concerned with their private lives. Nowadays, fans seem to be more interested in who they’re dating or what they’re wearing than their actual work. Jolie also touched on her parenting style, and revealed that she often finds herself saying clichéd phrases like “I don’t care who started it, but I’m here to finish it” when dealing with her children.
During our conversation, my friend revealed that she came across a parenting system in a magazine that involves rewarding children with sticker stars which can be exchanged for treats. She mentioned that this approach not only helps in controlling the kids but also teaches them the basics of capitalism. However, she gave more importance to her mother’s parenting style that encouraged her to enhance her individual personality without any hindrance. Although, she did mention that she can discipline her children when required.
I was intrigued about her view on adoption and asked if there was any difference in bonding between a mother and a biological child compared to an adopted one. She responded with a “no” but later on added that she found the experience of having a C-section fascinating and miraculous. She always wanted to adopt and saw it as a gift rather than a sacrifice. She considers herself fortunate to have children from three different continents.
Jolie explained how fulfilling her first adoption experience was. It had been a long-standing desire of hers to give a child a home and she finds joy in watching her child grow and learn new things every day.
In her recollection, she shared the story of how a nurse brought Maddox to her and left shortly after. Being inexperienced in childcare, she called her mother and inquired about the number of bottles required for babies in a day. Shiloh’s birth took place in a small hospital in Namibia, where they were the only patients. The experience turned out to be beautiful as the doctors and nurses took great care of them in a comfortable room. Jolie also revealed that they named Shiloh after her parents, who almost named their first child the same before a miscarriage. She also expressed her thoughts on religion and how she plans to educate her children about different religions and cultures. The discussion often led back to her mother, who had a significant influence on her life and taught her about death. Jolie admired her mother for her devotion to the family and understood the significance of prioritizing children’s needs over one’s own.
Jolie got emotional and shed tears while expressing her feelings about her mother. She struggled to control her emotions and voice throughout the conversation. She revealed how she explained her mother’s death to her son, Mad, using various beliefs about the afterlife, including heaven and ghosts. Jolie also took responsibility for making arrangements for her mother’s body to be picked up from the morgue and expressed relief that her mother was no longer suffering from pain. Jolie recollected her childhood memories, where she watched her father in “The Champ” and thought he was actually dead in the final scene where his character dies. This experience might have affected her perception of fantasy and reality. When asked about her father’s Oscar-winning movie “Coming Home,” Jolie admitted that she had never watched it before.
Jolie’s personal experiences with her father’s infidelity and divorce from her mother have influenced how she responds to rumors about her own involvement in Brad Pitt’s split from Jennifer Aniston. Despite being estranged from her father, actor Jon Voight, his influence on her as an artist has been significant. Growing up, Jolie desired a big family due to the trauma of her parents’ divorce. She believes that artists raise their children differently, with a focus on creativity. Early on in her career, Jolie appeared in sub-par films but her talent for acting was undeniable. Each role added depth to her public persona, from meeting her first husband on set to playing a lesbian in “Gia”. Her appearance in “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” solidified her relationship with Pitt, although it ultimately led to his divorce from Aniston. The film also explores the idea of movie stars trying to appear like relatable, everyday people.
During my visit to Washington, D.C., I had the opportunity to catch up with Jolie at the historic Hay-Adams hotel, situated across from the White House. While her sons were in Los Angeles with Brad, Jolie was in town with her daughters, attending a ceremony where she presented an award to Mariane Pearl, the widow of journalist Daniel Pearl. We later discussed her involvement with refugees over a meal at the restaurant downstairs from the lobby. Jolie recounted how her experience filming “Tomb Raider” in Cambodia led her to understand the world’s problems and make several trips with the U.N. to countries such as Pakistan and Sierra Leone.
I asked Jolie if her philanthropic pursuits overshadowed Brad Pitt’s role in their relationship, to which she replied that their shared values and goals brought them together. Despite having different areas of interest, they both wanted to make a difference in the world and supported each other’s efforts. We also talked about the media and paparazzi, and Jolie shared that she avoided reading tabloid stories about celebrities as it could negatively affect people she cared about. As our conversation ended, I was struck by Jolie’s genuine passion for helping others, which was truly inspiring.
